Position Summary:

Resource Staffing Solutions (RSS) is seeking an experienced SMP Estimator to support our client. The estimator will prepare detailed, drawing-based cost estimates for structural steel, platework, mechanical, and specialist fabrication projects primarily across the mining, infrastructure, and food manufacturing sectors. The successful candidate will work within established SOPs, advanced Excel workbooks, and use reference documents provided by the client. While training will be provided on specific tools and formats, a high level of baseline estimating capability is required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drawing Interpretation: Interpret engineering drawings (primarily 2D PDF; ability to understand 3D CAD models is desirable) to prepare accurate and comprehensive estimates for fabricated components and assemblies.
  • BOM & Calculations: Populate Bill of Materials (BOM), process times, labour, and surface treatment costs in Excel worksheets for each project drawing.
  • Supplier Engagement: Prepare material and service takeoffs and send to suppliers (using a supplier list provided by Chess Engineering) to obtain up-to-date pricing and lead times.
  • Reference Data Application: Reference and apply standard weld time, process, and cost tables as per client SOPs and provided frameworks.
  • Consolidation & QA: Calculate total material, labour, and treatment costs, apply standard markups, consolidate results in the project summary sheet, and conduct QA checks to ensure estimate accuracy.
  • Documentation: Archive estimate documentation per company protocol.
  • Team Collaboration: Liaise with internal team members and, where required, with project staff, suppliers, and subcontractors for scope and pricing clarifications.
  • Compliance: Operate within a compliance-driven (ISO 9001) environment, adhering to AS/NZS and ISO standards as relevant.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years proven experience in fabrication estimating for structural, platework, or mechanical assemblies, especially in mining, infrastructure, or food manufacturing (SMP: Structural, Mechanical, Piping).
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas and sheet referencing.
  • Strong ability to interpret and extract information from 2D engineering drawings; familiarity with 3D CAD models is a plus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fabrication shop processes (cutting, welding, machining, assembly, surface treatment) and workshop labour allowances.
  • Experience preparing takeoffs and communicating with suppliers/subcontractors (using provided supplier lists) to secure pricing and delivery details.
  • Effective English communication skills; written and verbal. Able to collaborate in remote and multidisciplinary teams.
  • High attention to detail and reliability; experience in ISO-certified or compliance-focused environments.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Previous exposure to Australian fabrication codes/standards.
  • Experience with estimating for food/pharma, defence, or complex/specialist fabrication projects.
  • Background in engineering, fabrication, or a closely related field.
  • Ability to read and interpret scope of work documents that accompany drawing packs.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines.
  • Positive attitude, continuous improvement mindset, and adaptability to new challenges and systems.

Please note, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted to discuss their application.
